My Students

Reading takes you to places you may never visit, allows you to experience adventures, and live a life you may never have the chance to live. My students have yet to understand this or even realize reading can be a pleasurable experience.

My students are wonderful, bright, and full of potential.

However, they attend an urban school that has a 91% free and reduced lunch rate, and the majority comes from a one parent household. The population of our student body is approximately 90% minority. What my students lack financially, they make up for with perseverance, intelligence, and personality. The character of my students is displayed in their giving. Several times this year, they have completed fundraisers for those in need. For instance, they raised money for the people in Haiti, for residence of the local nursing home, and gave to Toys for Tots.

My Project

I am asking for young adult contemporary novels for a Reading Revolution project. These books will be matched to students based on their reading levels and according to their interests. They will participate in a Reading Relay in which they will be divided into teams. The team that completes the relay first by reading a certain number of books and completing a project on them will be declared the winner. The books will be kept in the Reading Corner which will consist of a rug, bean bag chairs, lights, and music. This will be a place that they can relax and read for pleasure and even come to study or work together. The students will learn that reading can be a pleasurable experience and that not all books are boring. By increasing the amount of time they read for pleasure, they will inadvertently improve their reading skills, and this will help them in all subject areas as well as provide them as basis for life long learning.

Reading for pleasure is extremely important, for it carries over into every aspect of life.

I had attempted to start this project on a small scale last year. Some of my students really enjoyed reading the novels; however, I did not have enough books to keep it going. They were willing to read, even hooked on reading, but they read all that I had. The libraries often do not carry many young adult contemporary material. Therefore, the students turn off reading.
