Rocket Kids

My students need a class rocket launching set.

My Students

So, we put a man on the moon...what next??? Help me show my kids how this happened through hands-on learning! What better way to tie Science to Social Studies than a good old fashioned rocket launch???

I teach 22 fifth grade students in South Carolina.

We have a wide variety of cultures represented...African American, Russian, Cambodian, Indian, Hispanic, etc. I have three special education students in my classroom. Nine of my students speak English as a second language. Six of my students are Gifted and Talented. One of my students receives speech services. All but 2-3 receive free or reduced lunch. A few live in communities where gang activity is an issue. Many are being raised by grandparents or single parents. One student has been to four different schools this year and is finally living with his mother again as she recently was released from jail. Despite these difficulties, these students are extremely hard-working. They get along well with others and respect diversity. They are a joy to be with in the classroom!

My Project

I am requesting an Estes Alpha Rocket Launch set, which includes 24 rockets, engines, a launch pad, and controller. This will allow this year's students to read and follow directions in order to assemble the rockets. I teach a Social Studies unit on the Cold War and Space Race and a Science unit on Force and Motion. The launching of rockets will be a wonderful hands-on activity to bring both units together for this year's students (and students I teach every year after as the rockets can be used again and again). I also read excerpts from Rocket Boys and show scenes from the movie, so the kids are able to identify with the excitement of the time period. This type of activity really appeals to all students. It allows me to reach even those students who aren't traditionally in love with Science or Social Studies. Through the rocket launch they'll have a first hand demonstration of the kinds of events taking place during the Space Race. They'll also have an understanding of physics.

This project is so very important as there are so many kids who just haven't developed a love of Science (which, as a nation, we are severely behind in compared to other nations) and Social Studies.

It has the potential to connect many subject areas (writing and math as well) and create an excitement for learning in all children I teach-this year and in the future!
