Enhancing Reading - Enhancing the World!

My students need a classroom computer in order to write stories and draw illustrations to display their progress in our Enhanced Reading program.

My Students

"You can only climb as high as the ladder you choose." This proverb says it all for my "Enhanced Reading" students - 25 from various rooms, all displaying some reading challenges. As they enter my room, they select the ladder they want - and the size. My students reach for the tallest possible!

Mostly African American hard of hearing and deaf in a Michigan inner city Elementary School, the students who come to me love to be challenged.

I am an African American storyteller and I mesmerize them as I sign folk tales filled with high moral content. I show them how to read these same tales in library books. And we write and write and read what we have written! How proud my children are when they read to each other and to visiting adults the stories they have created. Two of my stories are part of the Accelerated Reading Program. My students love to read and be tested on those books. They always ask me when more books of mine will be added to the list!

My Project

Now that my students are motivated to read and write their own stories, what an absolute joy it will be to be able to produce these tales on the computer, onto web sites which will publish them for all to see! Even though they are deaf, they will proudly demonstrate their reading progress by signing their own products as others read along!

My students are deaf, and are often considered slow and stupid.

Nothing is further from the reality. My children love to learn and grasp every lesson firmly. Our Enhanced reading program goes above and beyond the regular reading class. WE WRITE! And then we proudly read what we have written to others. Using handwritten works, our audience is narrowed down to just our class. But, once we are able to put our stories on the web - and read them to others - our excitement for learning will explode!
