My Students

"Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim," Elie Wiesel said in his Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech. Like Elie Wiesel did when we wrote Night, students in my classroom are asked to take part in stopping a social injustice they feel strongly about.

Our Middle School is a unique and diverse school.

Using a traditional middle school model, our school prides itself on small class sizes and a small school setting. The students are comprised of 87% Latino, 43% who are native Spanish speakers. we are a Title 1 school. In my Language Arts class, I challenge students to be thinkers. This year, I am especially amazed at the academic risks these students are willing to take. They just don't read a text, they devour it and then ask the question why? Why was it written? Why is important for me? Why is it important for society? Why is it important in the future? While the students may not have all the advantages some students have, they most certainly have the drive for success and the drive to make an impact in the world in which they live.

My Project

In my 8th grade class, my students will research a social issue and create a project that takes action on the issue. As a mentor text, the students read Night by Elie Wiesel. Their purpose for reading is to see how Elie Wiesel took action when faced with a devastating social injustice. The students will then use inquiry to decide what current social injustice they feel they need to take action against. I believe it is important for the students to make their own choice on how they want to take action on their social issue and how they want to get their important message across. The students have been working diligently on their Night book discussions blogs on the Internet, and realize the power the Internet holds in getting their thoughts out to the mass population. With video cameras, the students can make powerful videos about their causes and publish them on the Web, encouraging other people to join their cause and get involved in making a change in the world around them.

With cameras in their hands, 8th graders will not just be students in a classroom.

8th graders will be social activists; learning, sharing and hopefully changing their world.
