My Students

I have collected great films and materials to spotlight and bring history to life. I can intertwine presentations with visuals to great effect, but our school has monitors literally 15-24 years old (none work now) and one T.V to service a floor with 16 classrooms servicing 500 students.

My students are inner city students, have reading deficiencies, and do not come from comfortable backgrounds for the most part, yet I find them to be of wonderful disposition generally.

We have formed some great relationships. They appreciate the efforts I put into teaching and they respond with great respect. They learn a great deal from watching visual material related to my lessons, but we are limited because of lack of equipment. It's sad because they sometimes say, "We are a poor school." Though they may be disadvantaged, they often elevate my spirits with their kindness and thirst for knowledge.

My Project

Teaching history can be an arduous task at times. Students that struggle to get through everyday simple existence can become alienated. My task is to bring it to life and to capture their imagination. When I was a young boy, I watched a T.V. series about Hercules. My father saw my interest in Greek mythology and bought me some simple encyclopedias. It set me on a path where I became a voracious reader. My next door neighbor took me to see "Patton" and that moved me in a way that put me into a love affair with history. I never stopped. My students often react the same way when I can show them a movie that colorizes my thoughts and ideas. I have a collection that can cover many aspects of history and culture and a picture is worth a thousand words. A correctly placed film can draw in a student and mesmerize them at times. With proper reinforcement and critiques I have seen them absorb an amazing amount of information. They live in a visual world and their response is evident.

My style is unique and I have always sought to show classic and new movies without reservation.

My students have achieved higher success rates in passing classes as well as regents scores. My attendance rate is higher than most classes and I believe my approach has drawn many "wall flowers" as I call them into the world of history and culture.
