My Students

Students cannot build new knowledge unless they make connections to what they already know. Many times the textbooks and curriculum don't provide the background that students need to make meaningful connections and build on their knowledge base. This can be frustrating and discouraging for them.

My students are wonderful people who demonstrate their resilience daily.

They are culturally diverse (majority Latino/a, African American, and Samoan). Our school is a low income school in California that constantly strives to build on the experiences and voices of our students' families. We do this in the hope of building a strong home-school connection and a place where not only do our students feel validated and welcomed, but their families do, as well.

My Project

Having a projector in my class will enable me to use so many of the rich resources that are easily available but difficult to bring to a class without the proper technology. The projector will enable me to show related video clips and have my students interact with websites that deepen their understanding of class material. Students often ask, "why do I have to learn this?" To show them how their class learning is applicable will be extremely exciting for them. For projects, I hope to have them learn how to present material through PowerPoint. Not only will this increase their computer literacy, but the project-based learning will increase their own interest in curriculum. I see so much potential for supporting my students' learning through the many usages of a projector.

Many of my students do not speak English as their first language.

Learning English through challenging curriculum can be overwhelming and frustrating. Using supplementary visuals and videos will help them connect with the concepts and lower their frustration in learning something new in a language they are still developing. This will help all my students because through visuals they will be able to connect new learning with prior knowledge. This bridge is essential in creating new knowledge.
