My Students

My African-American students become avid readers if provided with culturally relevant novels. High school students as a whole tend to be reluctant readers. They are naturally drawn to novels that relate to their real life experiences.

My students live in a high poverty rural area of Mississippi.

Their model of the world is limited to the confines of our small county. Many rarely venture outside its boundaries. They exhibit this hungry desire for expansion of their minds and cultural experiences. A good novel provides a wonderful way to travel beyond their everyday encounters.

My Project

The resources requested are contemporary novels for African-Americans teens by African-American authors. In past years, there has been a limited number of titles published for this particular audience. There seems to be a literary renaissance occurring that has given birth to wonderful culturally relevant fiction. These novels are thankfully included in the Accelerated Reading program. Students can read these wonderful works and then take quizzes to check for reading comprehension. The purpose of this project is to inspire more African-American high school students to read for pleasure and improvement of reading comprehension skills. The dream is to lead them from these novels to other great works of literature by famous African-American authors such as W.E.B. DuBois, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, Tony Morrison, Alice Walker, and others. This will open their mind to other great literature. The end result will be strong readers with unlimited opportunities for academic success.

Our students have a very limited access to contemporary books in general.

Our public library has suffered from continuous outbreaks of black mold due to structural damage dating back to Hurricane Katrina. The black mold problem has caused the library to lose numerous books. The nearest bookstore is over 35 miles away. Many of our students don't have transportation or financial means to purchase books at the bookstore. Our library has become their primary source for books.
