My Students

Help us get ready for college and to document how we see and use math in the real world! My students have had several opportunities to present math projects connecting what we learn to the real world, but they continue to struggle with their presentation skills and with their documentation.

I teach Pre-Calculus and Statistics to 11th and 12th graders in a high-needs public charter high school.

The primary focus of our school is to prepare underserved students for success in college and beyond. We aim to have 100% of our graduating class attend college and have been quite successful at helping our students achieve this goal. A majority of students are minority and over 85% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many students will be the first in their family to attend and graduate from college.

My Project

I am requesting a Flip camcorder to prepare my students for success in college and beyond. My students will be able to document and see how high-level math concepts are applied in the real world, a connection they need to make in college. I've created a math project to help them do this, in which they work in small teams to record math applications and analyze how the concepts we learn in class are related to the applications they recorded. In addition, my students have completed several math consulting projects and have presented their recommendations to the class, simulating college-level course work and real-life consulting problems in the business world. It would be an invaluable learning opportunity for my students if I were able to record their presentations so they could review them. They'll be able to analyze their own presentation and communication skills, specifically their ability to speak intelligently about high-level math concepts to their peers and teacher.

Recording and analyzing their math learning will be tremendously beneficial to my students and will help prepare them for college level courses.

This will allow my students to experience math in a new and exciting way, and I am certain I will see great improvement in two important areas: 1) my students' ability to communicate effectively about math, and 2) their ability to discover, document, and analyze math connections in the real world.
