Smells Like Teen Spirit

My students need books that deal with mental health issues to help them understand their anger, anxiety or troubles.

My Students

Teen’s mental health is a very important part of their overall health. Statistically, teens facing mental heath problems are more likely to get into trouble in school, engage in risky behavior, and have more physical health problems.

Ours is an urban high school consisting of 1300 students in a district of San Francisco, CA.

The majority of our students come from working class families and many are the first (of their family's) generation attending an American high school. Our students are bright, curious, and open to new ideas.

My Project

Many teenagers experience mental health problems. According to the National Mental Health Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services, five to nine percent of children and youth between the age of 9 and 17 have serious emotional disturbances that cause real problems in their family, school and community life. In accordance with the California Department of Education's Mental Health standard, our library aims to "provide mental health services in a school-based setting (that) helps address barriers to learning and provide supports so that all students can achieve in school and ultimately in life. Schools are also places where prevention and early intervention activities can occur in a non-stigmatizing environment."

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration states that "13.3% of all youth" receives services for emotional or behavioral problems in a specialty mental health setting.

Our library is not trying to take the place of a mental health professional, but simply help teens address the problems that they are facing. My students need books that deal with mental health issues to help them understand their anger, anxiety or troubles.
