My Students

Bo Bennett quotes,“Enthusiasm is excitement with inspiration, motivation, and a pinch of creativity.” From a recent survey, our fifth grade students need enthusiasm and motivation for learning since they lack the effort to be successful. Our students need household objects to start a STOMP group.

Our students are very diverse.

We have 40% African American, 35% Hispanic, 20% Anglo and a small population of Asian students. 70% of our students are considered Economically Disadvantaged so many of them have not had the opportunities and experiences they need to be successful. Our fifth grade students lack motivation and effort and generally have a hard time with state mandated assessments. Our school is a Recognized campus but this year the state requirements are higher and our fifth grade scores might keep us from keeping that status. Approximately, 40% of our fifth grade students are at-risk for not passing our state assessments. We have several special education students and several students facing economic difficulties. Behavior is an issue in our 5th grade, resulting in 60% of our after school detentions. If these students are not given the opportunity to improve their behavior and academics, they are likely to become more truant as they prepare for middle and high school.

My Project

Our fifth grade students will have the opportunity to create and perform STOMP routines. They will use brooms, trashcans, buckets and mallets made with tennis balls to create routines. They will travel into the community and to other schools to perform their routines. They will perform at our school as well. This will enable them to be leaders and role models at our school. Each fifth grade student will learn the objectives necessary to put on shows that include: rhythms, beats, singing, body percussion and the use of household made instruments. Students will become musically motivated and enriched through these experiences. Our students will also incorporate their vocabulary words and other facts they are learning into beats and rhymes to help them connect their learning. STOMP will encourage students to perform at high levels of learning. Our program will produce results that brain research shows comes with effective instructional strategies that incorporate music and movement.

STOMP will teach objectives with hands-on and performance based opportunities.

Students will use high levels of learning as they create their performances. Our project will help motivate students to do well in school and in music. The performances will inspire students and give them an appreciation of music for life. They will become the leaders and role models of our campus. Students will know that if they show effort and dedication, they will have the ability to STOMP into success!
