This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Almost every day, I hear the question, "French teacher, what are we going to do today?" This is not an easy question in a class with no textbook, few hands-on materials, no teacher guide, and no curriculum. We need books and materials to help us learn!

Almost all of my students are living at or below the poverty line.

It is an urban school with a world language focus, but few funds to buy materials to serve the nearly 300 students in the elementary French program. Students are Mexican-American and many are recent immigrants who are learning both English and French at the same time. It is a large public urban elementary school in a district that is extremely strapped for cash. Despite all these challenges, the students like coming to school and the attendance rate is very high. In a recent survey, more than 90% of our students said that they felt supported by our teachers.

My Project

The Symtalk program is excellent. I have already spent hundreds of dollars of my own money to purchase the Symtalk materials for my first and kindergarten classes. If I had the money, I would purchase the curriculum for every grade level I teach. It is extremely effective. The symbol cards allow students to associate French vocabulary with symbols and speak in whole sentences in French even before they know how to write. It is a fast and easy way for students to learn French. The program allows students to learn in a similar way that they learn their first language. It is also excellent for my English Language Learners because it uses pictures to introduce vocabulary instead of relying on English translation. The program has been very effective for my first grade students who are now able to read and create grammatically correct sentences in French. It is also fun. Students like using the cards because it is a hands-on approach to language learning.
