My Students

My Algebra I students, at a college-prep charter high school, who have developed fear/anger towards mathematics. But, they all are computer and video game players. This is what they always talk about before and after class. My students play all types of video games, from XBox/PS3 to web-based.

However, I have read the studies and seen the data that indicates the greatest factor impacting positive improvement that relates to students reaching college and being successful once they get there is mathematical competence.

And because I want to make difference, I see my job one as preparing each and every one of my students for college. I refuse to settle when it comes to the future success of my students. While I am determined to guide my culturally diverse group of students through the perilous waters of Algebra I, I am currently unable to receive any money for additional resources to support my students, who are all gamers, due to the dire cutbacks in the educational funding available to my school. I need resources, like a video console and games, that will be able to inspire my students, while simultaneously building skills and creating a foundation of understanding. My students need to be supported, and as much as it pains me to admit it, I can’t do all by myself.

My Project

If a Nintendo Wii gaming console, 3 video game controllers, and a video game ("Big Brain Academy") skills are purchased for my students, both boys & girls, they will be able to more effectively build the mathematical foundation of understanding to successfully complete the college-prep Algebra I courses I teach. This Wii gaming system will engage and support my culturally diverse group of students so that they develop into a community of learners on an interactive level, and improve the degree to which my students can meet math standards and persist on the way to college. And, the skills that my college-prep courses develop are going to be fundamental if my students are going to be successful on mandatory state tests, as well as pre-university assessments such as the SAT & ACT tests. But, it all begins with capturing my students’ attention with a Nintendo Wii and the video game “Big Brain Academy.”

A philosopher once said "I can only climb slowly up the mountain of mathematics.” This is the case for my students, both boys & girls, as they confront the rigor and challenge of college-prep Algebra.

They are moving forward, slowly. If you are able to support this project to use interactive video games to improve math skills, you will be speeding up the process as my students continue on through my course towards graduation and the gates of college. Together Wii can make a positive difference.
