Reading About Writing is Cool

My students need 14 books about writing, including "How to Write Your Life Story" and "Reading Like a Writer", along with 35 subscriptions to Time For Kids magazine.

My Students

"What to write about?" asked the students. "Write about your life," said the teacher. Even at 11 to 14 years old, my students are just learning to write about their decade of experiences occurring by the minute. However, the best part is reading their stories that are put on paper.

My students live in poverty stricken neighborhoods.

Ninety-eight percent of them get free lunch. We are a school that is high needs. They are 5th and 6th graders in a reading intervention program that helps struggling readers. My students do not like reading or practice reading in the home as much as I would like them to. However, after discovering this fact, I set out to elevate their interest in reading and writing. My students have read in different genres of literature. In addition, they are writing in each style (expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive) for this school year. They are reading stories that interest them. This year I would like my students to write their own book using their own experiences as themes in their books. Responding to literature, giving information, convincing someone about a subject matter, describing something, and telling a story has given my students lots of experience in writing.

My Project

The books I am requesting are resources selected on their reading levels for researching and reading for pleasure. "Writing Magic" is a book that will guide students in creating stories that keep the reader's interest. The author, Fletcher will inspire students become writers and writing about their own experiences. Students will act and think like writers when they read the "Boy Writers" and "Girl Smarts." "Time for Kids" will give my students another source of reading about current events and provide topics for them to evaluate. To keep students focused on the Reading and Writing Project, students can complete activities in both subjects by using the workbook, "SAT Critical Reading and Writing Workbook; and, "Nonfiction Matters: a guide for people who love books and for those who want to write them." Finally, as a teacher, I can capture more ideas for the reading/writing project by researching "Reading for the gifted student" and "A quick guide to reaching struggling writers."

This project is important because it will create responsibility for taking ownership of their reading and writing; and, charge their curiosity for continued reading and writing.

To add, my students will get the opportunity to live in the world of a writer and publisher to ultimately culminate with a product they have created. Donations for this project will make a renowned difference in how students perceive reading and writing. The impact of this project on my students is positive and lasting.
