Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"How can I focus on reading with my class when I'm a 6th grade MATH teacher?," I thought. Well, why not do BOTH!

Reading is definitely one of the weaker subjects for my students.

They really seem to struggle with applying different skills across all curriculum areas. I teach in a low-income, blue collar, and predominantly Hispanic area. For many of my students, English is a second language. The more practice I can provide for them to read and write, the better their comprehension and fluency will become.

My Project

The literature books that I have requested tell humorous, cute, and memorable stories relating different math standards to fairy tales and short stories. For example: The Grapes of Math, contains 16 different “mind-stretching math riddles” designed to challenge the reader to solve problems in different ways. In simple, rhyming text, the author helps children learn to “organize information by identifying patterns and symmetries.” For example, the riddle entitled “One Hump or Two?” asks the reader to figure out the number of camel humps that appear on the page – not SLOWLY by counting each individual hump, but QUICKLY by grouping them by fives first. These literature books will not only give students the opportunity to learn math in a new and exciting way, they can also practice their reading and comprehension skills too.

Ask any kid in America what his favorite subject in school is, and chances are math will not be the answer!

Memorizing multiplication facts, fighting through math formulas – all can be intimidating to students. This literature series is designed to help kids ages 7 – 12 learn math content in a fun and exciting way. These books would be a valuable educational tool for my students and I, and would help them overcome their fear of math and become successful problem solvers.
