Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever found an amazing virtual fieldtrip you wanted to explore, but were frustrated by the slowness and/or freezing of your computer? That is what my students experience whenever I try to share websites devoted to ancient lands, cave paintings, and artifacts. What a letdown!

I work with two groups of students throughout the day.

When the children are in my class they are learning language arts and history/social science. Each class consists of approximately 25 students, so this project would impact 50 students. My energetic, creative, awesome students bring joy to our classroom everyday with their sense of humor, their close-knit friendships, and their resilient attitudes. My diverse group of sixth grade students attend school in an area of high poverty and face several challenges in life. The majority of my students receive free breakfast and free or reduced lunch. Many participate in our after-school program and are on campus until evening. My students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds; many are immigrants from Mexico or Somalia who have participated in English language programs since arrival. In spite of these challenges my students come to school every day eager to learn and excited to participate.

My Project

I am requesting a HP ProBook laptop computer. Currently my classroom is equipped with a projector and speakers which are fairly new, but the computer is a bit of a dinosaur. Even though our school has high speed Internet access the speed of the old computer makes it impossible to access the resources I would like to share with my students. The donation of the HP ProBook would allow us to view virtual fieldtrips to the Egyptian pyramids, Lascaux cave paintings in France, and 3D ancient wonders in Greece. Since the majority of students will never have the opportunity to visit these marvels while they are studying them, the virtual fieldtrips give them an opportunity to experience these wonders while in the classroom. In addition, the ProBook would be used for presentation of other subject material and students would have opportunities to share their writing and do group or individual presentations which would include a technology component.

This project is vital to my class because without it we have to rely on equipment that is slow and unreliable.

If you have ever tried to keep 25 pre-teens interested in a lesson when technology is moving at a snail's pace you will understand my dilemma. My options are to ignore the rich and robust resources available to us on the Internet and go back to a textbook driven classroom, or to continue to try to access these resources and deal with the frustration of freezing web pages. Please help!
