My Students

"I can't hear him!" is something I hear daily in my classroom. My students value what their peers have to say and share but it's difficult to hear each other when students talk very quietly and voices become muffled when they speak right into their book or paper.

I have 18 7-8 year olds in a very rural second grade class in Wisconsin.

They are all very eager to share the books that they read and the writing they create with their peers. I have one autistic student in my classroom who needs academic support. With a voice amplifier, this student can focus on directions.

My Project

Something that has encouraged my students to share is an old microphone I scrounged up. The participation level sky-rocketed compared to sharing without a microphone. We used the microphone so much that it broke and is no longer working or repairable. I have a student with autism in my classroom and when other students are reading from a textbook or responding into the microphone it helps the student with autism focus and narrow in to what we are working on. Studies show that male children cannot hear to the capacity girls can. Second graders tend to talk very quietly when sharing and responding to teacher prompts. This is very difficult for boys to hear and understand what conversations are going on without the teacher repeating everything. With a voice amplifier, all students, including boys and girls, can hear the classroom conversations at an equal capacity creating a learning classroom environment.

The voice amplifier will be used on a daily basis at all times during the day.

The amplifier will be used by the classroom teacher when giving directions and by the students when they are sharing the books they read and the creative writing they draft every day. This voice amplifier encourages all students to have an equal opportunity to share and express their opinions and thoughts.
