My Students

With the renewed focus on our environment and living a greener lifestyle, we are trying to teach our children how to grow their own fruits and vegetables. We are hoping to expose our children to ways to be a part of the green movement and to see the benefits it holds for them and their future.

My students live in a city and have limited experience with gardening and nature.

Our school has become an environmental focus school and our hope is to teach our children about living in harmony with the environment and to be stewards of their Earth. My students are in first grade and it is exciting to watch them explore the Earth. When we go on field trips to the local park, it is exciting to see the joy in their faces and hear the excitement in their voices as they notice news things. They exhibit a desire to learn and explore nature. Our school is an inner city school and we have a diverse student population. Our students come from a variety of economical backgrounds.

My Project

Our school is undertaking a large vegetable garden project this spring. All the different grade levels will have an area of the garden to grow vegetables in. We have started our plants from seeds in the greenhouse and plan to transplant them outside after the frost is over. We need tools to help us be able to do the transplanting. We hope to have all the children involved with the project so that they see how to garden, learn about gardening techniques and experience working a garden with their own hands. The tools we are requesting for our project will be used in the garden and will help our students learn how to take care of a garden. Our students will get hands on experience with all aspects of growing their own vegetables. We also are working on getting fruit trees planted on the school property and the children will learn how to prune and care for those trees as well as the vegetables.

We feel that our project is important as it will have a life long impact on the students.

They will learn skills that will help them throughout their lives. They will be able to be self sufficient in the world and provide food for themselves. They will learn about the value of working together for the betterment of their community.
