Evergreen Negro Cemetery

My Students

This year's Service Learning Project is to clean up the Evergreen Negro Cemetery and create a photo file of headstones of "Buffalo Soldiers" who are buried there. This is phase 2 of this service learning project located in the heart of 5th Ward, Houston, Texas.

The demographics of my students are approximately sixty percent African American, forty percent Hispanic.

We are a Title I school who just got back to Academically Acceptable Status. We are forecasting that the Campus can obtain "Recognized" status this year based on standardized testing. Free and Reduced lunches are the norm in this economically disadvantaged area.

My Project

Evergreen Cemetery is a deteriorating Houston landmark. We wish to Photo-Document our progress as well as take photos of the "Buffalo Soldier" headstones. The students will gain knowledge about the history of their community as well as helping beautify the neighborhood. Regardless of their ethnic background, the students will learn of the Buffalo Soldiers' impact in bringing equality in the armed services. Americans bleed red, no matter what color skin they have.
