Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist" Help us learn to speak out for injustice in the world.

My students attend middle school in Queens.

They are English Language Learners from a new immigrant community who face many barriers each day. Yet, they continue to make strides and overcome those barriers. They are hard working, motivated, and eager to learn.

My Project

I have been blessed with the opportunity to improve my students' learning and lives by teaming up with the Social Studies Department in my school. Together with my colleagues I am planning a unit that will make history come alive for our students. We need copies of Night by Elie Wiesel to improve our unit that focuses on World War II. They will be able to connect names and faces to the hundreds of thousands of Jews that were killed during that time period. They will realize that the persecution they faced is similar to the prejudices that still exist in today's society. The children will learn that they must stand up to injustice in the world, though that injustice may not effect them, or when it does there will be nobody to "stand up" for them.

This project is very important because they all face and overcome obstacles and suffer from prejudices.

By showing them the connection that the Holocaust has to their lives, they will better understand the cruelty and horror of the time period and realize the importance of acceptance.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
