Simply Wishing for a Sand Table!

My students need a sand and water table in order to grasp the concepts of movement of matter and properties of water with a tangible tool.

My Students

Do you remember playing at the beach as a child, watching the dry sand fall through the sieve or funnel? Building a moat around your castle and filling the moat with water? Hands on learning at this age is essential to grasping the concepts.

I have classroom of 21 children who learn through play and experience.

This is culturally and socio-economically diverse group of students. They are fascinated by watching things grow, planting, creating and constructing. They are not a quiet bunch! They are energetic and are fueled by their own curiosity! The questions never stop and they are always abuzz with chatter among themselves around new discoveries. Having opportunities for hands on play fully engages them. They have touched and explored every object and learning tool accessible to them in my classroom! I can "feed" them fast enough. Longfellow Elementary School is a K-5 school in Portland, Maine. We have approximately 400 students with access to both the urban and rural environments. Longfellow is not considered a "high needs" school, and we have a wonderful population of parent and community volunteers.

My Project

As we are in a colder climate more often than not, we are always eager to find ways to experience nature when getting outside to learn is a challenge. This water/sand table will replicate some of our favorite outdoor activities when we cannot go outside. This learning tool will allow for creative play options as well as wonderful learning opportunities.

There are no local funds available to update, add to or replace materials.

Additionally, we are not eligible for supplemental funding to invest in learning materials. The school budget was frozen for this year early in the fall, and next years district budget is being cut by 6 million dollars. OUCH!
