My Students

In 1994 Broderbund introduced the first Living Book: "Just Grandma and Me". This marked a milestone in children's software. Broderbund took a book written by Mercer Mayer and transformed it into an interactive adventure for the computer that still conjures up wonder and excitement today.

I teach kindergarten in a high-needs elementary school in New York.

Many of my students are English language learners experiencing their first year in public school. Our class is working on reading readiness skills through many different kinds of early literacy experiences. Including technology as a part of my classroom activities will motivate my students and allow them to learn and share their understanding of literary concepts in a variety of ways.

My Project

From a developmental standpoint technology in the classroom can offer kindergartners a multitude of learning opportunities from the practice at manipulating the mouse to the whole range of action and reaction responses from high quality learning web-sites, such as the case with Living Books. When a child is reading a Living Book, as the text is read by the narrator words are highlighted showing the all important left to right and top to bottom conventions that kindergartners are being exposed to. I believe that the acquisition of literacy is an integrated process involving listening, speaking, reading and writing. The use of the HP desktop computer will support reading readiness and my overall goal to ensure that all children become able readers, writers, speakers, and listeners and are critical thinkers who can take responsibility.

Children in kindergarten must master important developmental learning tasks to be ready for the more advanced, abstract learning required of them in the primary grades.

This technology will be used to support children's foundational skills and to bring engaging, interactive literacy experiences that will meet the needs of all the learners in my classroom.
