Microscopes for Life Science

My students need 2 microscopes and a visual adapter in order to learn about cellular processes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a charter school funded mainly by grant money, in a time when grant money is difficult to find, we just do not have the money to rent 15 microscopes for a week at a time for our students. Slowly, I'd like to build up a class set for your school to use year after year.

Our school is located in a community overwhelmed with crime, poverty, parent-less children, homelessness, etc.

Unfortunately, although some of the most prestigious colleges are mere blocks away, most children from this area do not even graduate High School, let alone attend college. This just continues to propagate the problems that overwhelm this community in a vicious cycle that never seems to end. However, our school was created with the vision that EVEN children in this neighborhood CAN learn. Every student at our school wants to go to college. Every student at our school has been instilled with the notion that education is the key to success and that it is not IF they go to college, but WHEN. As a result, our students have such a passion for learning. Extras, like using microscopes, just fuel that passion.

My Project

As their first "real" science teacher, I love to start the year with an activity to hook them. Nothing beats looking at life through the lens of a microscope! Everyday things look completely different. And students are shocked to see that tiny cells really are alive. Throughout the remainder of the school year, many of my lessons would be improved with the use of microscopes. Students will understand the stages of Mitosis and Meiosis much easier by looking at real examples. The process or cellular respiration and photosynthesis will make much more sense when the students can actually see the cell organelles. The list of opportunities is endless.

I know a class set of microscopes is a far-off goal.

But each microscope we are donated takes us one step closer to reaching that goal, and saves us money each year (one less microscope to pay to rent). So even if the microscope is used, outdated, or not super fancy - we appreciate anything you are willing to do to help our students get the most out of their education.
