My Students

Remember the thrill of finding a book you truly loved? Many of our rising sophomores have yet to find the book that turns them on to reading, but that will soon change. The final book of The Hunger Games series will be published this summer and a movie is in the works.

Our rural community is rapidly growing.

Our Title I school provides learning experiences to students who come from all walks of life and represent a wonderful mix of many races. Our caring faculty sponsors a variety of clubs offering students a chance to make new friends and share new experiences.

My Project

With your generous help, this fall our book club will discuss The Hunger Games series. I will visit all English II classes in August and book talk the first book, The Hunger Games. This riveting story is set in the future and features two very different teens who must team up in a battle for their lives. Students will be invited to our first book club meeting and told the book is available in the school library. Those who read the entire series and attend all book discussions will be invited to go on a field trip to see the movie when it premieres in 2011. Book club offers students the chance to exchange ideas about what they have read and builds self-confidence and friendships in those attending. Students not only learn to think critically about their reading but also to provide support from the novel to back up their opinions. They also learn to make real world connections to what they have read and often find themselves writing down book titles referred to by other members.

By providing him with a not only one book, but a whole series of books that will grab his attention, you ensure that he continues to read. Not only will you be providing a reluctant reader with books, you will be encouraging him to think critically to prepare to discuss them with others. The more a student reads, the better reader he or she becomes. Success in reading translates to success in school.
