My Students

Children love to retell stories and story retelling helps young children develop a good sense of story structure and good story language. It is an important part of learning to read. Talking about and retelling the stories they hear are important parts of their literacy experience and development.

My students are "pre-schoolers" at a public school for at risk students in a low income area of North Carolina.

They are excited about school and love hearing stories and learning new things. As Literacy Coordinator, I try to give them every opportunity to develop pre-reading skills and to discover the wonder of books.

My Project

These story retelling kits that I have selected will allow the children to recall and retell stories. Hearing good stories is critical for young children to prepare them to become readers. Talking about the stories they have heard and working with the stories engages the children in literacy. These kits will encourage the children to use good story language to retell the story. They will help the children sequence the beginning, middle and end of the story. They will encourage conversation about the story where the children can make personal connections with the story.

Your donation will help give these children some tools to help them begin to develop strong literacy skills.

The materials will be used for future students also, extending their value. You can help build a future generation of life-long learners and readers.
