My Students

Playful Puck, bumbling Bottom, love-sick Helena, and regal Titania! I want my students to meet them all! My 24 wonderful freshmen have never read Shakespeare nor seen a live performance. This April, that's all about to change.

My freshmen are funny and great.

Their Pennsylvania high school, however, rarely meets their expectations. The school is persistently failing under the No Child Left Behind Act. The kids rarely have opportunities beyond the classroom and the sports field.

My Project

However, I'd like to give my freshmen a chance to experience something totally different while preparing them for college. At the end of April, we are going to see a professional Shakespeare company perform, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." To get ready for this exciting performance, the kids will read and study the play, with each kid getting her own copy of the play and the Spark Notes to keep. We will use additional texts to supplement our learning, such as illustrated storybooks and audio-recordings of the play.

This project will give my kids their first taste of a world outside, but not far from, our school.

It will expose them to the greatest English writer and to the fun of theater. It will prepare them for college, where they will be expected to read and understand Shakespeare. With your help, we can provide both a rigorous academic curriculum and a fun school environment.
