Making Connections

My students need fun, hands on, take-home reading activities that will engage parents and students at home.

My Students

What is a favorite memory of 2nd grade? Snuggling up to mom and dad at night, reading stories together. That is the goal of my request today. If you donate hands on backpacks that promote reading, my students will make connections with their parents each week with different reading skills.

We are a rural school district in Wisconsin, where the poverty level is 49%.

Our classroom sizes are no more than 15. We have a large Hispanic population. My students come to school and get breakfast and lunch. Some stay after school in a program where they get a snack. Our staff is highly involved with getting our students the best education we can provide, even if funding is hard to find. My students love to learn and work exceptionally hard. They enjoy hands on activities and playing games while learning. Most of my students ache for time with parents who are busy trying to make ends meet. My students continually share their excitement in reading stories with parents at night.

My Project

If my students had reading backpacks, they would be able to brush up on their skills in a hands on, fun, game like fashion while also making connections with mom and dad at home. For some of my students, who live with grandma and grandpa, this too would be terrific to make those connections stronger yet. The backpacks are easily transportable for my students who are divorced and have to travel each week to a different location. The learning that will take place from the books and activities is priceless. To give my students time with their families...precious time that some are yearning for, is why I am asking for these backpacks today. Although my parents are busy trying to make ends meet, the activities in the backpacks require a minimum of 30 minutes. 2nd graders should be reading more than that a week, however, the students could read their stories in the backpacks to their younger siblings as well, making connections there.

I work very hard at providing my families with a daily note of what we learned and how their child did in school.

I have found paper books with worksheets to provide my students with reading activities over the weekend. A paper book with worksheets doesn't build connections between parent and child. My goal is to give my students the knowledge and family connection that will carry them not only through 2nd grade, but through life. Memories with parents are all that some of my students have.
