My Students

Imagine yourself on a journey to an unknown place. All you know is you have to go, but not sure why. On this journey you encounter the very present theme of good vs evil, and not always sure which is which. In this book students must face their own feelings of desperation and the will to survive.

The students who will be reading this book are at grade level - 10th grade predominately - but require a lot of motivation to read and be actively engaged.

The high school they attend has approximately 2,200 students. The class sizes are large and the level of comprehension varies greatly. The students are reluctant readers for the most part. This book is full of action and suspense, therefore, I feel it would be something to keep them interested and actively engaged not only in the reading of the book but the discussions that would follow.

My Project

This book, "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, would inspire the students to rethink their lives, their relationship with their family, and their place in the world. The characters in the book travel to an unknown destiny in a world that is rapidly changing and threatening their existence. To many students this is a very real feeling, and one which they too have experienced. Not exactly like the characters in the book, but still an ever present fear and unknowing that consumes their own lives on a daily basis.

This book, would be sure to generate the type of feelings you want your students to experience when reading.

I honestly feel "The Road" would be a new beginning for many students who never before had the desire to read, They would be challenged and inspired to read more. The student who would sit and blend into the background will surely be moved to discuss and share their own thoughts and beliefs, and perhaps even encourage them to face their own fears and desires as they reach adulthood.
