Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are usually 10th graders, sometimes 11th or 12th graders, ranging from 5th to 10th grade reading levels. Good quality literature challenges and scares them. Using technology and art to depict literature and help students to visualize is helpful to build enthusiasm and understanding.

I work in the inner city of Philadelphia in a charter school.

My students are 10-12th graders--typically Puerto Rican, but our African American population is growing. Students are typically from low income families, often first generation in the US and sometimes second language learners.

My Project

Students will use these cameras to visualize characters and scenes from literature such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Rose for Emily and The Lottery. Students will pose in the pictures, design backgrounds and costumes. Students will be required to accompany pictures with quotes from the literature in order to show their understanding and to have them practice quoting literature.

I have given this assignment in the past and the students, who were able to gain access to the cameras, really enjoyed it.

In addition to that, I realized that these students had to read and reread scenes from the literature closely in order to include the proper details. Students also learned to work together and use their strengths.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
