My Students

I always find it amusing that I have to encourage some of my students to speak up and at the same time teach others to talk softly in class. It makes things difficult when you are trying to teach phonemic awareness and pre-reading skills.

This is an everyday struggle when you teach preschool, especially when your classroom contains many three and four-year-old second language learners and students with autism and speech and language impairments, as I do in a large urban school district.

My Project

I want to help my terrific kids by providing them with "sound phones" that they can use to hear themselves read when they are using a whisper voice, and "echo microphones" that amplify voices. I feel this will encourage my quiet students to use their voices more often and at the same time encourage my enthusiastic students to use a quieter voice when using the "sound phones", allowing them all to hear and correct themselves as they learn sounds and reading skills.

Please help make a difference in these young learners lives by helping them learn the skills necessary to become strong readers and to be able to communicate effectively in school.
