My Students

Students are begging to record what's happening in our school! They want to share the good things they are finding and creating with peers, parents, and visitors. A Flip camera is perfect for getting them started on this journey, one which will continue to follow them through college and life.

We are a small, Midwest school on the outskirts of a larger city.

Our school includes students from preschool through fifth grade, about 350 students in all. We have a diverse population with a large number of students qualifying for free and reduced lunches. Our children are good-natured, eager to learn, and excited about teaching others what they know! I have three fifth grade students who ask me on a weekly basis when they can start a broadcasting show for our school. They want to inspire students with the work that is going on in our school and in our community. They all have expressed interest in wanting to go into broadcasting when they reach high school and college and they want to get a head start by beginning the process in elementary school. As the media specialist in our school, due to shortages in funds and staff, I also serve in the role as technology coordinator/teacher. I want to do what I can to help these students realize their goals and aspirations.

My Project

These cameras will allow students and teachers to capture the small and large moments in their classrooms. They will be able to post them on their wikis, create video documentation, and share them with other students and visitors to our school, as well as creating a link to friends and relatives outside their immediate area. One of our teachers takes video clips on her camera phone and posts them on her wiki. These videos and photos are viewed by one of her student's grandmothers in Mexico, who would normally not get to see what's going on, every day, in her life. These are the connections we need to foster and help create. These Flip cameras will serve as an easy medium for getting this started. Students will be able to begin realizing their dreams of broadcasting and sharing information by using these simple, 21st century tools to increase their learning as well and sharing information with others. The Flip camera HD, will allow us to create a quality product to share work.

Since we are currently preparing our students for jobs and skills that don't yet exist, we need to be sure we are teaching them how to problem-solve and use what they have to share information.

This camera is a small step in achieving that and helping to prepare them for life after elementary school. This will foster their skills, encourage them to further develop them by going to college, and therefore create productive citizens in our ever-changing world where information exchange is key.
