Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are in the heart of an impoverished area. In Africa the belief is that "It takes a village to raise a child"; Well this village cant afford to raise these children, so I reach out to those that can and do on their behalf.

My students are five and six year olds with multiple impediments.

Some have learning disabilities, some have physical needs such as; shunts, wheelchairs, walkers, lack of arms and walking difficulties due to cerebral palsy. Some function on a three year old level and some are not even potty trained at five years old. They are funny, excited about life, curious and oblivious of their differences. They love to sing, dance and play instruments. They are the sunshine on dreary days and I will do all in my power to provide them with any and all items that will give them a leg up on life.

My Project

In Kindergarten, our main focus is to teach them how to function with their disabilities as best as possible. Due to their various conditions the whisper phones I requested will help them with their speech and language development. The sound boxes will help them hone their hearing and strengthen their listening skills. I chose some tactile tools for them to help them strengthen their fingers and improve their writing skills. Some of these items may seem like simple toys, but what we the "regular " people deem simple; My babies see as the almost impossible. I say almost because they are fighters and refuse to give in to the limitations that life has placed on them.

My special little rays of sunshine bring me great joy.

They have a long hard road ahead of them and I need to prepare them as best as I can. These tools will help strengthen their minds, their ears, fingers and eyes but most of all[ their spirits and give them what they need to persevere. You can't imagine what that moment, when one of them says "I can do it all by myself" is like. I know times are hard but you can make such a difference for them, so I thank you in advance for all you do.
