My Students

Knowing how to read is empowerment. The students in my class are learning a second language and struggle with the sight words because they don't follow the normal rules in reading. Sight word practice and centers will facilitate success in students success in learning.

I teach second grade in a Title One school, in a high needs community.

The students in my school are homeless children who live in weekly/monthly apartments and in shelters. Because the students are homeless we have a high transiency rate, so every moment needs to be productive cause we don't have our kids for very long. Most of the students are English language learners and do not have language support at home because English is not spoken in the home. Our school tries to bridge the gap between the languages, by offering a parent center to help parents understand how they can help their students at home.

My Project

It is very important for students to be able to recognize sight words at a glance. Sight words are 50 - 75% of all the words that children in elementary school will read. It is important that these words be recognized at a glance because many sight words do not sound like they are spelled so they cannot be sounded out using phonic skills. When a student knows the sight words it gives them the advantage when reading a passage with difficult words because the meaning of the passage is not lost.

With your help my students will be able to read sight words at a glance.

These activities will help my students manipulating sight words to form sentences in their writing, read sight words easily, increase their vocabulary, foster self confidence, and give them opportunity to become fluent readers. These skills and tools will help my students be successful in their education. After all knowledge is empowerment!
