Help! A Virus Has Attacked The World And We Need To Save It!

My students need an LCD Projector Mount that would allow all students to effectively see important science concepts from all areas in the classroom.

My Students

Have you ever seen the movie "Outbreak"? It is a movie describing how a virus attacks a small American town and causes severe illness and death. My students are faced with the challenge of learning how the topic of evolution is relevant and important to their lives.

My school district is a rural agriculture culture with many at-risk students.

We have 1 high school, 1 middle, and 1 primary/elementary school. There are many chicken houses and cattle farms. (We don't even have a stoplight). All of our schools are considered to be Title schools, which means that there is a high population that qualify for free/reduced lunch. We also have a high population of special needs students. Most of my students have never seen a big city like Atlanta. Resources are very limited, and students often come to school with little or no supplies. The economy has been hard on parents because most of them are self employed. Students love to come to school because it offers them a safe place, breakfast and lunch and teachers that care about them. My students are eager to learn new concepts, but have a hard time making the connection because of their environment. Our school has low test scores but high motivation and a genuine concern from students to learn.

My Project

My students generally deserve more resources such as technology, field trips and guest speakers. Realistically we cannot afford field trips and guest speakers. We already have a projector that was given to school with outside funds, but desperately need an LCD mount. This mount would allow the projector to be effectively stabilized and easily accessible in a classroom. The mount would allow students from every part of the classroom to see why its important to learn about evolution and viruses through the eyes of virtual guest speakers and videos. Students will be able to virtually view specimens such as the AIDS virus, the common flu, and even the Ebola virus by looking at various websites. Georgia Standards are crucial in the teaching and curriculum in our school, but resources are very limited. If this project was funded, students could master the standard, as well as gain a deeper understanding of why Science is important to their present, as well as their future.

This broad impact will allow my students to see Science, do Science and become Science. Perhaps this one project will even ignite a spark to motivate these students even further and continue their college education.
