Rise Up Singing

My students need a set of new choral risers to stand on during Choral performances.

My Students

Henry Purcell said in one of his most famous songs "If music be the food of love, Sing on, Sing on." My choir students spend everyday doing not only what Purcell asks, but overcoming all the challenges thrown their way. The risers we use during performances remains our hardest battle.

Our school is located in a rural part of Mississippi, and most of the students I teach are from low income families.

I have the privilege of teaching some of the most passionate, hard working, and dedicated young people in the school. Every year they learn music not only for a Christmas concert but also for a spring concert and a yearly competition. We also travel during the Christmas season to local nursing homes and Christmas events to sing Carols. We currently use three sets of three tiered tapered risers that are about fifteen years old. For all performances, we have to put the risers together by laying them flat, opening them up, and locking the supports before turning each up right. The process always leaves several students with pinched fingers. Taking them apart is just as problematic. We have to use ball point pens to push in the joints on several of the supports, while someone else pushes the joint loose so we can fold the riser to put them away.

My Project

New risers would not only save our fingers, but they will also increase the confidence of each singer. A student can sing to the best of their ability but they will always be more confident if they feel safe on the risers. Our current risers are falling apart and are quickly becoming a safety hazard. The new risers will have wheels which will make them easy to transport. They will be also sturdy and easy to assemble. The students will be able to set up for performances faster and more efficiently, which will give them more time to rehearse and relax before performances. Our current risers look just as old as they are becoming. Each level is supposed to have a black rubber mat so the students will not slip while performing. Some of the mats are either missing or coming off leaving a glue stain for the students to stand on. When my choirs perform, they wear very nice choral dresses, shirts, and vests, but the look of our risers take away from their professional appearance.

We really need your help.

Not only do my choirs use the risers on an almost weekly basis, but my elementary music classes use them as well. My sixth grade performs an annual musical, and selected classes from the lower grades also perform throughout the year. The new risers will impact almost 600 students throughout our school, and give all my performers confidence, and a sense of achievement. Your donation will allow all of our school's music students to excel like they never have before.
