This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students are always asking, "Where's the tape?" Our Because of Winn Dixie books are falling apart as we read, you can hear the screech of the tape dispenser and the flutter of pages falling as students are flipping the pages of our old books.

I teach at a charter school in the inner city of Indiana.

My students are low income and rely on me for most, if not all, of their supplies, including chapter books to read. They are incredibly smart, inquisitive kiddos who LOVE to read. They ask me, when they are given computer time, if they can read instead...I LOVE that! I may be bias, but these kiddos are pretty great!

My Project

I have found that students enjoy reading the actual novel rather than reading the story out of their reading text book, which isn't the whole story. I have a set of 22 Because of Winn Dixie books, but I have 26 students, as does my teaching partner. I am asking for 54 books, so EACH student may read their own book, and not have to share. Also, a book for each teacher. The books are so old, that many of the pages are taped in, and by my students, so you can imagine what the books look like! We shuffle them across the hall daily. Yet, they are unfazed by the looks of the novels, and the sharing. We have found TONS of similes in Because of Winn Dixie! They LOVE figurative language! They have also created many beautiful projects associated with the book that are aligned with our state standards! I would love to do more with this book for years to come!

I want the best for my students, they deserve it.

It is distracting to them when a page falls out and they have to stuff it back in the book until they are finished. I would not be so concerned if it were not THE WHOLE SET that is falling apart. So, that is why I am asking you to help us in receiving new copies of this beloved story. Thank you in advance for your generous donations!
