My Students

Look in the mirror. Who do you see? Can you imagine looking into the mirror and seeing yourself as you were as a child and that child looking back and imagining who he or she would be as a grown up? My students will consider these questions as they draw and paint self portraits.

Our elementary school is located in an economically struggling city in Michigan and a neighborhood that is searching for hope.

Many of my students are gifted with both the ability to imagine a brighter future and the desire to express that creatively. Many of my students are enthusiastic and talented and I wish to nurture this. Working with quality materials rather than hand-me-downs is quite a reward for them and excites them to do more and better work. Many are lacking any opportunities to draw at home. They need encouragement and a place to grow their talents.

My Project

Each grade has a different take on the self portrait. Construction papers will be used to trace and cut out silhouettes of the 5th graders looking into their futures as a combined collage/drawing project. 4th graders will use regular and metallic watercolors to show how they shine. Liquid watercolors allow for easier mixing and more vivid colors. The paint sticks are superb for adding details. 3rd graders will draw and paint a storytelling portrait illustrating special interests. 2nd graders will use the stand up portrait heads with natural tones of markers to draw and color their faces. 1st graders will combine construction papers and a painted face to cut and glue a full length portrait. Kindergartners will put on a happy face using paint sticks and watercolor to make everyone smile.

We urgently need paper, markers & paint.

These self-portraits will be keepsakes for years to come and help them remember something of their youth & dreams. I hope the projects will also inspire them to continue making art and dreaming of what they can become.
