My Students

Since teenagers walked the earth, they have been subjected to peer pressure, including the pressure to try drugs and alcohol. The more students who know about the dangers of drug use, the more likely students will be to “just say no to drugs.”

I teach sophomores at a small city school in Central New York.

This district is rich with diversity. About 60% of the students here are classified as minorities, and approximately 10% of the students speak a language other than English at home. Many of my students are motivated, college-bound students. They face many challenges, including poverty and broken families, yet they are determined to succeed.

My Project

Recently, I have been made aware that some of my students have problems with drug addiction and depression. I was introduced to a wonderful book, called Go Ask Alice, that I’m certain would benefit my students. The book is the diary of a teenage girl who wants to fit in, like all teenagers do, and is tricked into trying drugs and instantly becomes addicted. I want to use Go Ask Alice to teach drug abuse prevention and promote suicide awareness. I also plan to use the book to make students aware of the dangers of giving into peer pressure. While money is provided for some classroom supplies, there isn't money available for new books this year. My students need to read this book. My goal is to give them the tools they need to make these important life decisions, which they will carry with them throughout high school and into college.
