My Students

Help us calculate! My students need scientific calculators to practice on in class. Most of their families can not afford even the basic school supplies, so when it's required to have a TI-XIIS for math, it is virtually impossible!

Hello!

I am a 7th-8th grade special education teacher in NY. I work with students who are socially, emotionally, and/or academically at risk with a variety of disabilities. This upcoming year will be my 7th year at my school. The students I work with have difficulty attending school, staying focused, & comprehending the assignments. They also have a difficult time with completing work in math, especially when it requires a calculator they do not have. Students will often say, "I can't do it because I don't have a calculator that will work," or "My mom can't get one, cause we don't have no money."

My Project

In NYS, we are able to use scientific calculators on the state exams each year. Since my students do not have the money to purchase one, they are limited in their performance on the test. For many of my students, using a calculator will allow them the success of passing the exam & not having to take an AIS class the following year. This, then, gives them the opportunity to take an elective where they will learn something that is interesting to them. Students will learn ways to use the calculator to help them solve various math problems and keep them interested in learning math.

Students in my class often feel they cannot get above water in their learning.

They already have some problems with their way of learning, and when something such as the TI-XIIS can give them hope of learning something they consider unlearnable, I strive to find a way to make that happen for them. It truly is not their fault they cannot afford the materials schools request of them. But to level the playing field and give them the opportunity to succeed, we need to do whatever we can to help.
