My Students

"Teacher, Teacher...May I print a copy of my story so that I can give it to my Papa? He always tells me that it makes him smile to read my stories, and I love to make my Papa happy!" Unfortunately, in our poor school district the money has run out for buying a new printer, much less ink cartridges.

Our school is in the heart of one of the poorest districts in our state.

I teach 21 precious 4th graders, all of which are from a wide variety of backgrounds and home situations. Before school even started this year, we knew that there was not enough money to buy all of the necessary things we need. A new printer and replacement ink was among those items.

My Project

In all subjects---but especially in writing---I allow my students to type their work on the computer. Not only do they gain computer literacy skills by doing this, but they also take greater pride in their work. I always have students to ask me, "Can I print a copy for my mama?" Unfortunately, my answer here lately has been, "I'm sorry, honey, but you can't because our printer is out of order." I wish you could see the sad looks on their faces when I tell them "no." It breaks my heart.

Many of my students go home to very dismal houses.

Their happiest memories are usually made here at school. If you choose to help me, we can help make their homes a brighter place (one that is filled with self-confidence). Thank you for your consideration.
