Effective ESL Lessons Require a Few Materials

My students need ink cartridges, a printer cable, and laminator refill cartridges for beautiful classwork and classroom materials.

My Students

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! It's not just a slogan in our Beginning ESL classroom.

I teach the newcomer program at a Title I school.

Our low socio-economic neighborhood faces many challenges. This means that my students do not get a lot of the necessary school materials from home. Whether it's lack of funds, lack of knowledge of our educational system and what it requires or both, my students look to me to guide and provide them with what they will need to be successful.

My Project

As a teacher, I don't make a lot of money, but I do know how to make the most of the resources we have and how to re-purpose old materials. I have an old HP printer that I would love to give to my students to use, but a few materials are necessary to allow that to happen. This printer is so old, that we need a new cable for it to work with newer computers. We need ink cartridges to allow us to continue to use it. We also need laminator refills for our little laminating machine to allow us to keep our work looking beautiful. Why not just buy a new printer? I don't believe in creating more waste when we have a perfectly good color printer that we will be able to use. I think this is an important lesson for my students to learn. Thanks to Donors Choose, we already do composting with our lunch scraps, and have refitted old headphones to use with our new computers.

The fact that it is color is key to helping ESL students understand and thereby learn more quickly the concepts that we need them to learn to become wonderful assets to our society.

Color is one of the first concepts that my students learn. I will now be able to use that knowledge to make connections. Join us in finding creative ways to re-purpose old materials and make our world that much greener!
