My Students

Do you remember the first time you wrote your own story and was proud of it even though your spelling and grammar we incorrect? I do, and boy was I so excited! This is how I would like my students to feel after they have completed a writing assignment.

I teach a kindergarten inclusion class.

It is a mix of regular and special ed students. My students have very young parents and some have adults raising them that can not read or write. I work in a very low income school that has very limited funds; 70-80% of our school gets free lunch. I am in desperate need of more writing paper.

My Project

We are coming to the end of the school year and our nice journal paper is gone. I have been giving the students newsprint journal paper and is not as nice. I have noticed that the students' writings have been getting messier and they are also writing less when we should be writing more. I think if I were to give them writing paper that was in color they would be more excited to write. At the beginning of the year I had purchased fancy journal paper and the students were excited to put their final copies out in the hallway because it made the hallway look nice. Now we try to dress up the paper by adding our coloring pictures to them but it just seems that this boring newsprint paper is just not getting them motivated to want to write.

I think it is very important for these students to want to write due to the fact that many of their adult role models in their homes can not write a proper sentence.

If the students are not motivated now, what will happen when they get into the upper grades? Please help me motivate the students by funding this project. New journals and colored journal paper would be a great motivator for them to want to start writing again.
