Bring a Rural School to the 21st Century With a Document Camera

My students need a document camera.

My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," Nelson Mandela said, and my students are learning how education can change their lives every day.

My students are high school special education students (grades 9-12) at a rural school in an extremely poverty stricken area in West Virginia.

The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, live in homes that don't have enough money for food at the end of the month, and don't have electricity or running water. My students will be the first of their family to graduate from high school and receive a diploma. The students I work with have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, mild mental impairments, moderate mental impairments, learning disabilities, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. My students come to me at the beginning of the year with no self-esteem and they have given up on themselves. I spend all year bringing their self-esteem back up. They are a wonderful group of children that are caring and lovable. They are technology-illiterate and have no idea what to do with a computer. These students need to be brought into the twenty-first century.

My Project

A document camera will enable my students to all participate in readings, activities, and projects together. This camera will project am image from a book, magazine, workbook, etc. onto the large whiteboard in front of the classroom for all students to see. Having a document camera will allow everyone to see what we are doing for the day and to understand what we are working on. Oral readings, reviewing concepts, and completing assignments will be a breeze with this equipment. My students will go from copies of workbook pages to being able to view the daily work in color and magnified. Anything that is on a piece of paper will be able to be viewed at the front of the classroom for all to see. Our knowledge will be expanded from the use of the textbook to a variety of resources.

You can help my students become technology literate with your donation!

My 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders will love that we no longer have to depend on the use of only a textbook that is written above their reading level. The textbook that we use is written on an 11th grade level and my students read on levels from kindergarten to 3rd grade. A document camera will assist my classroom for years to come!
