My Students

Have you ever asked your own children, "What did you do in school today." The answer was probably, "nothing." My proposal will spark family discussion at the dinner table and get the entire family involved in a discussion and project centered around famous artists! Simply take an artist home!

I teach a wonderful group of enthusiastic 4th graders the just can't get enough of the Art program.

They come from very diverse cultures and backgrounds and represent just about every ethnic group. Unfortunately, they only attend Art class for one third of the year. I would like to keep contact with them and encourage their creativity though a program that would provide them with supplies and information that they will be able to share with their families.

My Project

My project "Dinner with Picasso/ Dessert with Degas will engage families into a discussion of famous artists and their masterpieces. Students will each take home an art box for a week. The box will include an art reproduction with the history of the artist and information about the art work. Also included, will be a simple question and answer sheet, as well as art supplies. The students will be asked to answer simple questions about the reproduction. Examples of questions would include: "What colors do you see?" "How does the painting make you feel?" etc. The students and their families are to treat the art work and the artist as their dinner guest. They will decide over dinner what supplies they will choose for a project inspired by the masterpiece. They may create the art work together as a family. When the work is completed they will also decide on a title. The finished work will be displayed in a gallery or museum setting establish within the school and a reception will be held.

We are so busy these days, that I feel my project will allow students and families the time to have fun, learn and create.

Since the art work will not be graded, it is an opportunity for children to learn just for the sake of gaining knowledge. I have taught for over 30 years and there is nothing more rewarding than an art show because everyone is so proud of their accomplishments. My proposal will also encourage Language Arts and writing since the students will respond to the masterpiece.
