Exploring Our Cultural Differences

My Students

We are all created different, and often time we aren't able to recognize and appreciate those differences. By allowing my students to interview others of different races and cultural backgrounds, it will give them the opportunity to become more knowledgeable of the individuals around them.

I have been working with this program for twelve years, and I serve high school youth in the rural Mississippi Delta who are at risk of dropping out of high school.

The young people that I teach are in need of being exposed to the melting pot that we call the United States. They are accustom to seeing others who look like them. I want them to be able to explore and see what is really out there.

My Project

If provided with a camcorder, these students will be able to capture the lives of those who are different from them and live differently from them. They will be able to compare cultures as well as see how the way others live relates to how they live. Students will be awarded the opportunity to see the similarities and differences they share with others.

I believe that if granted the opportunity, the students you help today will be able to see beyond the rural area that they are growing up in today.

They can see that life is different and people are different, yet in some ways we are the same.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
