This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember that book that sparked your love for reading? Books like that are hard to find for middle school students, but they are excited about these books!

My students attend a public middle school in Florida.

I have 135 students. Many of these students are ESE or ESOL students who need to work at their reading skills. Many times middle schoolers are "too cool" for reading, but when they see their favorite teacher and peers reading, they get inspired.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the books Uglies and Maximum Ride. In the past I have had students very excited by these books. I have "talked" them up and the kids were very excited to read them. I thought we had the books in our library but unfortunately we don't. I have seen many students who hate to read inspired to read by books like Twilight.You might not like those books, but to me as long as they are reading and learning to love reading, whatever book they choose is fine. My students have shown an interest in these two books (Uglies and Maximum Ride) but there are no funds to buy the sets. If we buy them, not only will my students use them, but I will share with the other teachers who might like to use them. The great thing about The Uglies is it is a book that has a lot of science and technology in it.

Reading is a skill a lot of students struggle with.

Letting them read books they love helps to enrich their lives and teach them to read. Maybe they will learn new words or concepts in a book that we read together and that will help them further down the road in another aspect of life.
