My Students

My students struggle to learn definitions of math vocabulary words yet they can remember the lyrics to their favorite poem, song, or rap with ease. I want my students to use their creative abilities to write poems, songs, or raps that help them and future students learn the meanings of vocab words.

My students along with their families have come from all over the world to New York.

English is a second language for many of them and learning technical new words can be overwhelming. Even though they face challenges in their daily lives, they are lucky because they go to a small, neighborhood k-8 school that has a caring and supportive staff. They are high energy kids who love to share stories about themselves and incorporate their personal interests and knowledge into learning.

My Project

My students need blank books to be able to create their own book of poems, songs, and raps. They will be able to take pride in their work and share it with others in an easy to read format. They also need markers and colored pencils along with construction paper to enhance the appearance of their books and let their creative juices flow. My students will get to improve their writing and artistic skills while developing their understanding of math vocabulary words.

This project will help many English language learners start to use their new language in a creative way while developing both their English and mathematics skills.

In addition, they will be able to let their creative and energetic minds to go wild.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
