My Students

I teach Eighth Grade Science in a low SES school in Indiana. This year to increase reading scores, we have instituted a Sustained Silent Read. Through this, we hope to increase the students love for reading by having a structured time everyday devoted to that sole purpose.

Many of my students come to the eighth grade with reading levels well below grade level.

Without the ability to read at grade level, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to pass the yearly assessments. I have found that many of the deficiencies come from a lack of actually reading and comprehending. Over the last year I have instituted a structured reading time into everyday devoted to increasing the habit of reading everyday. I would like to show the students that not all reading has to be a chore, but can be enjoyable. I am hoping that through this, students will get into the habit of reading daily, and hopefully that will correlate into higher assessment scores.

My Project

My class participates in a Sustained Silent Read, that means everyday my students will silently read a book of their choice for twenty continuous minutes. Over the last couple years I have found that when students find a type of book they enjoy they seem to read it more often. So for this reason I haven chosen twenty-one books that seem to be very popular. These books have been on the popularity charts among young teens, and they are all parts of a series. I hope that if the story continues into different books the students will continue to read the others in the series. My overall hope is that student reading levels will increase.

Many of my students can not go to the library, or can't afford the books on their own. You donation will allow them to have the opportunity to read popular books in my class. Hopefully through their Sustained Silent Read, they will spark a love for reading that will continue to burn and grow into their futures.
