Aiming for an Adventure in Africa!

My students need 23 texts to gain a general background of the African continent and a variety of research books for an independent research project.

Help my students travel to a new place on a learning adventure; I will bring them to Africa in an eight-week research unit. I teach reading in a Title 1 public school in Washington Heights, New York City. My students are a combination of Special Education and former ELL students who need a boost to be able to succeed in the regular classroom.

Students I teach are the struggling readers in Grades 3 and 4. These kids are already behind but not old enough yet to be turned off to school. While they can still believe in education, I want to help them see that they can become experts on a big topic and sharpen their strategies to master information and express it in the larger school community.

I need children's non-fiction books about the African continent and particular countries and cultures to tempt my students' curiosity and give them enough information to dig deep.

Please help support these children in this effort to engage and empower them - while enriching a multicultural understanding that city kids who never leave their own predominantly Hispanic neighborhood sorely need!
