My Students

How do you write the right way? How do you "write" better? I have students who are emergent writers in English, and at the other end of the spectrum, I have writers who need to concentrate on their voice and the subtle nuances of word choice. All of whom need and want to write the right way.

My students are a wonderful mixed ability group of public school kids who bring different needs and strengths to their academics.

My English language learners are eager but struggling writers who need the support that writing centers will give them to help them structure their prose. They are understandably visual learners at this time and need hands-on materials to build their mechanics through practice writing. My other students range from grade level to those in need of enrichment and they all have the desire to create motivating and engaging texts, some need to work on structure and flow, others need to enhance their voice and vocabulary choices. The big common denominator is the glow they all get when they publish a piece of writing that they are proud of.

My Project

To differentiate for the needs of this diverse group I have asked for the "Be a Poet" center which, by the nature of the genre, be accessible to all my students. The Step By Step Writing Centers will assist my ELLs and other students who struggle with structure, as will the Extra! Extra! Supporting Details center. The Content Area Writing Prompts will address students who need assistance with topic selection and offer an enrichment option for my very productive writers. For instruction, the Developing Writing Skills Magnetic Teaching Charts will permit me to model the skills in whole class and small group situations while the Writing Activity Packets and Instant Writing Center will allow for pair and independent work. No curriculum exists without a research component and the Research & Report Writing Center will be an invaluable reference. These centers will be hands on and engaging which is what it takes to make the students enthusiastic about the writing process.

Writing is a lifelong skill and without the right foundation, students can't become accomplished in this discipline.

These centers will provide the resources to help my very diverse but diligent students to succeed in writing the right way! These engaging materials will excite them to want to write successfully. Thank you for considering this proposal to make them accomplished writers. Hopefully, with your help they'll have the "write" stuff!
