I am a librarian for a rural district, and I teach library skills to students from K-12. We are a small community with high-achieving students, but with limited resources.

For the past two years, I have had dozens of students researching assignments and projects based on inventions or an inventor. Some of these are History Day projects, some are research projects, and some are projects where they get to choose their own topic, and have chosen a topic that is an important invention. The books in our small school library are both limited and aging, and many topics that students choose or have assigned to them are just plain not available in the library most readily available to them.

I need some books on inventions. I have chosen some books on inventions in general, which include information on a wide variety of inventions, from the toothbrush to the television, and I have also chosen some books that seem to be popular topics, such as weapons used throughout history, penicillin, and cell phones. These resources would enable my students to find print sources on their topic, rather than relying solely on the Internet. They would also feel less frustration through the research process by finding sources at their fingertips, instead of looking at regional libraries, which is not possible for every student.

Your help will ensure that my students will be able to complete superb research projects in a successful manner. Because these books will be in a school library, they will not only benefit the current students, but many students, for years to come. Students will realize that the Internet is not the only place to find information, and that the school library is an important place in the school environment.
